Confused. Determined. Stories of Decisions

This is a collection of memoirs by Ukrainian women who continue to live, act, give birth, grow, and support others during wartime. The book brings together 60 memoirs from women across Ukraine, from Kyiv to Mariupol. Its voices include volunteers, servicewomen, medics, journalists, mothers and partners of soldiers, leaders in the civic sector, and well-known and influential Ukrainian women.

It also features women who gave birth in the harsh conditions of war, mothers who evacuated their children to safety, and those who endured occupation, captivity, and other trials. These women have travelled a long path — from the confusion of the first day of the full-scale invasion to the unwavering determination that followed. It was the decisions they made that helped them overcome the initial shock and begin to act. The book captures the emotional states and experiences they faced when confronted with war, as well as the resilience they developed in its reality.

At its core, this collection is about the voices of women and their message to the reader: we are valuable wherever we are. Their monologues serve both as a historical record of wartime events and as deeply personal, inspiring testimonies filled with the will to live against all odds. The book was created by a team of 21 specialists. Over the course of 14 months, they conducted interviews, transformed them into memoirs, illustrated, designed, typeset, and ultimately printed the publication. This work is an invaluable contribution to documenting historical events that will remain forever etched in collective memory.
