*When Winter Smelled of Blood* is a historical novel about the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921. It chronicles the journey of Velymyr, a young man raised by a pro-Russian father and a Ukrainian mother. Through personal loss, inner turmoil, and the brutal trials of war, Velymyr consciously chooses to fight for Ukraine. From his days at the *gymnasium* and his national awakening to the Student Kuren, battles, torture by the Cheka, service with the Sich Riflemen, and the devastating tragedies and deaths of loved ones, the protagonist remains true to both himself and his people. This novel is more than just a military epic; it is a story about the true cost of freedom, the choice to be oneself, and the imperative to remain human amidst the horrors of history. Moreover, it serves as a lesson for all of us—the descendants of those who laid down their bones in nameless, forgotten mass graves. It is a lesson on the importance of being fearless and proud, united and strong, for we will face this test again and again; as long as Muscovy exists, it will seek to destroy us. And, regrettably, this lesson is drawn from the mistakes of our great-grandparents.
